Torsions

Solo Exhibition, Sometimes Space, Ypsilanti, MI

September 1, 2024

In this exhibition, the often overlooked and complex narratives embedded within everyday objects and materials are explored through processes of transformation and combination. Each sculpture serves as an inquiry into the tension between function and form – reimagining objects traditionally associated with utility to spark a dialogue about learned identities. These reimagined objects reflect how constructed identities manifest within domesticity and gender narratives. By altering an object’s utility, new meanings and emotions are evoked prompting viewers to question the inherent significance of these objects.

The unabashedly alternative and labor-intensive processes involved in creating these pieces are vital to understanding them. By allowing the objects to exist as proxies of the body, viewers are invited to reassess the relationships between material, form, and meaning, challenging them to discover the extraordinary within the ordinary and to reflect on how our perceptions are shaped by the contexts in which the objects exist.
